LED Lights for Pool

LED Lights for Pool

When we first started thinking about putting LED lights in the pool, I didn’t realise how much of a difference they’d make—not just for how it looks at night, but also for how much easier and cheaper they are to run than the old halogen setup.

Here’s what matters straight away: LED lights are brighter, they use way less power, and they last a heck of a lot longer. If you’re still using halogen, you’re basically wasting energy (and money) every time you switch those lights on.

Why LED over anything else?

Let’s cut to the chase—LEDs are just better. They’re more energy efficient, they don’t heat up the water like halogens can, and they give you tonnes of colour options if you want that extra wow factor. Think of it like switching from an old flip phone to a smartphone. Sure, the old one made calls, but the new one does everything, right?

Plus, LEDs are super low maintenance. Once they’re in, you pretty much forget about them for years. Compare that to halogens, which blow more often than not—been there, done that, too many times.

Types of LED Pool Lights

Now, if you’re hunting for what to actually buy, there’s a few main types to keep in mind:

  • Flush-mounted LEDs: These sit flat against your pool wall. Sleek look, very tidy.
  • Surface-mounted LEDs: Stick out a bit but easier to install if you’re retrofitting an older pool.
  • Floating LEDs: These are cool for special occasions or parties—just toss them in and enjoy. Not a permanent solution though.

RGB LED options (the colour-changing ones) are really good if you want to change the vibe—great for night swims or dinners outside with friends. Good ones let you pick colours with a remote or phone app.

Where to shop in NZ

Here in New Zealand, we’ve got solid options when shopping for LED pool lights. I ended up browsing places like LightingPlus.co.nz and SpaPoolsOtago.co.nz to get a feel for the range. Poolsystems.co.nz also has a decent selection, especially if you’re hunting for something a bit more professional grade.

If you’ve got a trusted local pool care person or electrician, it’s worth having a chat—they often have access to trade-only suppliers and know which brands work best here. (By the way, I spoke to a guy from Auckland Pool & Spa—told me Spa Electrics and Aquaquip are two of the more reliable brands they’ve seen last well in our conditions).

Installation—do it yourself or get someone?

Installing pool lights isn’t quite like swapping out a bulb in your hallway. If it’s just replacing existing lights with new LEDs, it can be a pretty simple job—but most of the time, it’s better to call in a pool specialist or sparkie to be safe, especially if wiring is involved.

Think of it like installing lights over your shower… water and power don’t mix unless you really know what you’re doing. Safety first, eh.

Cost? Let’s talk numbers

Alright, so LEDs can cost a bit more up front—maybe $200-$500 per light depending on brand and whether you want all the colour-changing features—but you’ll make that back with energy savings and not having to replace blown bulbs every summer.

Let’s say your old halogen setup was eating up 100 watts per light. Now imagine swapping that out for a 20-30 watt LED that does the same job (or better). You’re instantly cutting costs every time the lights go on. Not to mention no more mid-season bulb shopping.

Compatibility—don’t skip this part

Here’s one trick I almost missed—make sure the LED lights are compatible with your current light fittings and transformer. Some LEDs need low voltage, some AC, some DC… it’s not super complicated, but mismatching it can be a pain. Ask the shop or a pool tech before buying. Seriously, save yourself the hassle.

Oh, and if you’re already thinking of upgrading your pool pump or filter system, sometimes it makes sense to do lighting at the same time—just to save time and cost while everything’s already being touched.

Final thought…

LED pool lighting is one of those upgrades that makes your backyard feel way more resort-like without blowing your budget. Especially here in NZ where we love a good summer evening around the pool. Good lighting means you get more out of your space, all year round.

So if you’re on the fence, I’d say go for it. Just do a little homework, check what fits with your setup, and get something that’ll last. You’ll thank yourself next time you’re outside, wine in hand, enjoying the glow.
